About the Annunciation:
- The Annunciation (or Evangelismos in Greek) to the Theotokos is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on March 25.
- According to the Gospel of Luke 1:26-38, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce to her that she would conceive and bear a son who "will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High". Mary replied that she knew no man and then the angel revealed that it is by the power of the Holy Spirit that she will conceive the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ. In faith and obedience to the will of God, Mary replied to the angel, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be according to your word.” Upon her response, the angel departed.According to holy tradition Mary was only fifteen when she was visited by Gabriel. This feast reminds us that our Theotokos was chosen by God, out of her extreme humility, simplicity, dedication, faith, love and nepsis to bear the Son of God.
- Many Orthodox are named for this event and celebrate their Feast Day on this date. Evangelia, Evangeline (f) and Evangelos, Evan and Angelo (m).
